SUMMARY
Coordinates and Supervises Central Library Reference Services, to assure excellence in customer service and maximum use of the services and resources of Central Library Reference. Leads system-wide reference services information & idea sharing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Leadership and Supervisory Responsibilities
- Leads, coaches, and supervises staff responsible for reference services by establishing the overall vision and direction of these areas within the mission, policies and procedures of the Library.
- Keeps staff aware of new developments and procedures through meetings, memos and conversations.
- Develops a cross-training program for staff whereby all staff can become proficient providing reference help in all the special collections in Reference Services.
- Supervisory responsibilities includes: interviews, selects, and trains employees; plans, assigns and directs work; evaluates performance and initiates improvement programs or disciplinary action as needed; addresses employee complaints and resolves problems; administers leave policies; motivates employees toward continuous improvement with the goal of providing excellence in customer service.
Customer Relations and Library Promotions
- Leads system-wide reference services information and idea sharing programs and opportunities.
- Represents the Library on community boards, attends events, and networks with others (businesses, organizations, etc.) to promote Reference services and programs.
- Develops programs specific to the Business Central, Foundation Center, and Indiana Room collections.
- Conducts tours of Central, makes presentations, gives book talks, coordinates the preparation of informational and promotional flyers for reference/non-fiction materials and otherwise promote the Library to the public.
- Coaches and reviews promotional activities by reference and other supervised staff.
- Responds to customer concerns and complaints and coaches staff in appropriate behavior.
- Works at the Information Desk to maintain skills, observe practices and provide leadership and training.
- Prepares and coordinates web site content for the Research and 55+ sections of the EVPL web site, and works with Marketing & Communication Coordinator to assure coverage and currency.
Materials and Facilities
- Participates and leads staff involvement in any program of material recommendations, selection, weeding, withdrawing, etc.
- Anticipates and plans for customer needs in print, database and other resource needs.
- Co-chairs the Database Selection Committees. Works directly with the Collection Development Manager to select, review, evaluate and promotes EVPL databases.
- Oversees selection of materials for the Indiana and local history collection housed in the Indiana Room.
- Oversees selection of Indiana Room materials for indexing and/or digizitation.
- Oversees securing of copyright permissions when necessary for Indiana Room materials selected for digizitation.
- Acts as liaison from areas supervised to other departments and to facilities maintenance staff.
Professional Development
- Attends conferences and other development and continuing education opportunities as well as reading trade literature to learn new ideas, technology, and trends providing feedback to others about these and leading the implementation of change.
- Participates in intra-Library meetings and committees.
Miscellaneous
- Prepares and present statistical and other reports for Library administration.
- Participates in state and national professional organizations.
- Participates in community activities.
REQUIRES: Master’s of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited school and a minimum of five years of relevant work experience in a public library - including supervisory experience, or combination of degree and experience relative to the job. Current Indiana State Library Certification or ability to achieve certification within 6 months of hire date. Must have great customer service skills, excellent communication skills, be self motivated, able to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours, including Sunday, and be dependable and responsible.
