*Must have Montessori training. The intent is to move this position to a full-time Literacy Coordinator in 2013; reposting the Program Aide position at that time.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs professional work developing and facilitating events, programs and displays to promote library literacy services, providing direct customer/learner assistance, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Programs and Partnership Manager. Under the direction of the READ Center Supervisor and as part of the Central Library READ Center team plans, prepares and presents programs for children that may include, storytelling, math, music, art, sign language or science based on the needs of the department.
- Researches, prepares for and facilitates literacy programs; attends community events in order to evaluate needs or options for literacy program development.
- Recognize successful methods and programs for teaching literacy skills and adapts them to the needs of adults and families in library literacy programs
- Effectively recruit, select, train, and evaluate support staff and volunteers.
- Organizes events and programs to promote literacy.
- Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials; maintain accurate records
- Attends various events and meetings as a representative and member of the department.
- Provides customer services at the reference desk; takes and responds to staff or patron inquiries related to programming, collections or general library information.
- Plans, prepares and presents programs for children that may include, storytelling, math, music, art, sign language or science based on the needs of the department.
- Prepares, updates and presents various usage and programming statistics.
- Helps maintain the collection; recommends items to purchase, weed or replace.
- Participates in outreach activities to build strong community partnerships.
REQUIRES: Bachelor's degree in education, or related field and Montessori training (elementary level preferred), or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to teach music or science preferred.
Must have great customer service skills, excellent communication skills, be self motivated, able to work a flexible schedule when required, must be available weekends (including Sunday) for special events, and be dependable and responsible. Applicants must adhere to Library’s Dress Guidelines (“Business Casual”) and dress suitable for the task at hand, and must maintain good personal hygiene in compliance with Library Code of Conduct.
Must be available weekends and evenings as scheduled. Must have a valid driver's license.
