What is a Mock Caldecott Award?

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Our Mock Caldecott is a way for children's librarians to go through the selection process used by the Caldecott committee to understand what makes one book better than another. We view, discuss and vote according to the Caldecott rules.

EVPL's collection development specialist , Carol Banks, compiles a quarterly list of picture books. Each list includes books that received starred or other highly recommended reviews in 6 journals (BCCB, Booklist, Horn Book, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews and School Library Journal). All titles should have a publication date in 2008--and all should have authors/illustrators who currently reside in the U.S.
