Class Visits to the READ Center

The READ Center welcomes visits from area preschools and elementary schools.
To maximize your class visit, the READ Center staff recommends the following
guidelines:
Preschool classes
Preschools and daycares may arrange for a story time experience in the River
Room. Story time sessions for 3-5 year-olds with Miss Ruthann usually last 30
minutes. Although most preschools and daycares prefer morning sessions, afternoon
story times are also available. Class size is usually limited to no more than
25 children.
Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2
Kindergarten, first and second grade classes are invited to participate in a
limited walking tour of Central Library (high points of the First Floor plus
the READ Center). A story time or book talk is also an important part of the
45 minute class visit. Students with a valid library card are encouraged to check
out one book during the visit.*** Class size is usually limited to no more than
50 students (half will tour while the other half enjoys the book talk).
Grade 3
All third grade classes in Vanderburgh County are invited to visit one of EVPL's
facilities from February to April of each school year. Although schools usually
visit the public library closest to them, any third grade class is welcome to
visit the READ Center. During the one-hour visit to the READ Center half of the
class will tour Central Library, while the other half enjoys a
book talk. At the half-hour, the groups will switch. Students with a valid library
card may also check out one book during this visit.*** Class size is usually limited
to no more than 50 students.
Grades 4-5
Class visits for fourth- and fifth-graders consist of a one-hour session. The
group will tour both floors of Central Library and enjoy a book talk. Half of
the group will tour, while the other half listens to the book talk. At the half-hour,
the groups will switch. Students with a valid library card may also check out
one book during this visit.*** Class size is usually limited to no more than 50
students.
If teachers want their students to check out books while on their library visit...
