Location: Central Library - READ Children's Center
Hours: Part-time, approximately 24 hours per week

Start Date: Immediate

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The program aide assists the Youth Services Librarian and READ Center staff with children’s programming and events, performs some circulation and materials activities, and provides excellent customer service when working with patrons at the children’s service desk and in programming within the READ Center or bookmobile. Other activities and special projects as assigned including participation in events and EVPL committees. Work is performed under the supervision of the READ Supervisor.

  • Plans, prepares and conducts programs in the Reading Education And Discovery Center (READ Center).
  • Assists customers with library processes, services, technology or computers.
  • Maintains the collection of materials by requesting, weeding, shelving, organizing, withdrawing, recommending or displaying items.
  • Prepares special book requests for caregivers, teachers and home educators.
  • Attends committee or other meetings, events and trainings.
  • Provides customer service at the reference desk.
  • Provides customer service via the bookmobile as needed; records bookmobile usage rates.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of teaching principles, practices, techniques and approaches related to early childhood development; general knowledge of related library policies, practices, programs and procedures; general skill operating standard office equipment and related hardware and software; general skill providing excellent internal and external customer service; general skill operating a motor vehicle; general skill learning specialized equipment and software systems pertaining to library operation; ability to communicate ideas effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to teach children instrumental music, beginning foreign language, sign language, technology and/or art; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the general public.

REQUIRES: Associates/Technical degree in library technology, children's services, or related field and minimal experience planning programs for children, working in a library, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree preferred. Must have great customer service skills, excellent communication skills, be self motivated, able to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours (including Sundays), and be dependable and responsible. Applicants must adhere to Library’s Dress Guidelines (“Business Casual”) and dress suitable for the task at hand, and must maintain good personal hygiene in compliance with Library Code of Conduct.

Special Requirements: Valid driver's license in the State of Indiana.

Physical Requirements: This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires walking, sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).
