Monday, January 18 marks this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day! Every year, we honor Dr. King, who dedicated his life to civil rights and the fight for equality. Here are just a few books to help you and your family understand and celebrate this important holiday.  

Be A King: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream and You by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by James E. Ransome 

This book will inspire you to “be a King” in your everyday life, by using bits of Dr. King’s life as an example.

My Daddy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by Martin Luther King III, illustrated by AG Ford 

Dr. King’s son wrote this book, giving us a glimpse into what Dr. King was like as a father and person, through the perspective of his young child. 

M.L.K.: Journey of a King by Tonya Bolden, photo editor Bob Adelman 

A great choice for older children and even adults, this book contains photographs of Dr. King’s life and times. 

Peaceful Fights for Equal Rights by Rob Sanders, illustrated by Jared Andrew Schorr 

Inspired by the nonviolent protests by Dr. King and others, this book highlights how to stand up for equal rights in a variety of ways. 

Whether you choose one of these titles or search for your own in our catalog, take time this Martin Luther King Jr. Day to reflect upon the journey and sacrifice of Dr. King and of countless others who continue to fight for civil rights.
