Legal Reference

As new federal laws are passed and signed by the President, they are published individually as "slip laws." At the end of the Legislative session, they are published collectively as U.S. Statutes at Large. All laws currently in effect are codified (arranged by subject) in the U.S. Code. Federal agencies issue regulations (which are not passed by the legislature but which still have the force of law) daily in the Federal Register. All regulations currently in effect are codified in the Code of Federal Regulations.

The Library of Congress makes federal legislative information freely available to the public. For information about bills, resolutions, current activity in Congress, congressional records, etc. visit The Library of Congress THOMAS website.
