Develop your child’s love for reading and learning—from the very beginning!—by signing up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.

By reading just one book a day, you and your child will complete 1,000 books in just over three years.  Caregivers and children form special bonds while reading together, and children who are read to are more prepared for kindergarten.

You can read any combination of books: a variety of different books, along with a favorite book read over and over.  All reading counts!

It is well known that parents and guardians are a child’s first teachers. Families can promote their child’s literacy development in many ways, and EVPL wants to help you in your journey.

To sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, families can visit any EVPL location or create a Beanstack account. The reading guide can be picked up or printed off, so that your reading journey can begin.  When your child reaches goals along the way, they will receive a small prize for their accomplishment. On completion of the program, children will receive a prize and their picture on EVPL social media (with guardian permission).

We want to celebrate your family’s achievement in recognizing the importance of reading at an early age!

*EVPL’s 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program was inspired by a similar initiative from the 1000 Books Foundation; on their site, you can find additional reading tips, literacy and education resources, and more.

How it works:

  1. Register at any Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library location or register on Beanstack. You will receive a reading log and a list of reading suggestions.
  2. For each book you read, color in a numbered space object.
  3. Your child will earn an out-of-this-world patch at 100, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 books.
  4. When you reach 1,000 books, your child will also get a shout-out on EVPL social media (with your permission, of course).
