The purpose of this initiative is to provide an educational and enriching opportunity for the EVPL community to remove some barriers and build a more inclusive community. This program is aimed at community members who are looking to work on building and developing an American Sign Language vocabulary and to foster an appreciation for the language.
It was inspired by some interactions that a few EVPL staff members have had with members of the community–such as assisting patrons who are deaf or hard-of-hearing–in navigating EVPL’s services and programs.
Other staff members have been learning ASL to better communicate with family members who are developing hearing loss. In collaborating together, we thought that this program could spark interest in others to further their American Sign Language knowledge.
Our hope is that patrons engaging in this program will gain new knowledge of–and appreciation for–ASL and the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
