We hear a lot about how exercising improves our health, our moods, and our energy level. But what if we don’t know where to start? What if we feel intimidated about going to the gym, or are worried that we are too out of shape even to begin an exercise program? The easiest, simplest, and cheapest form of exercise is… walking! You do not need any special equipment or clothing, although a sturdy pair of rubber-soled shoes certainly help! And you can pretty much go for a walk at any time, anywhere. You can start out as slowly as you need to, and develop your endurance to cover farther distances the more you practice. Even a little bit, say 10 minutes each day, is significant for your long-term health. The Mayo Clinic has some great information to share on how beneficial walking is to our overall health and well-being.

A good way to stick with an exercise routine is to get an “exercise buddy” – someone who will join you on your walks and keep you accountable. You can hold them accountable too! And for the dog owners out there, don’t forget that walking your dog is great for both you and your pet. Happy trails!
